Custom Coiffer wigs can be attached to your head by a licensed hair stylist or you can choose to attach the wig yourself. Contact us for a licensed stylist who can professionally attach your Custom Coiffer. Each order comes with written instructions on caring and maintaining your Custom Coiffer.
You can also opt to attach the wig yourself; once you understand the technique it’s quite easy.
- Custom Coiffer wigs are attached with either double sided tapes and/or with liquid adhesives specifically made for attaching Custom Coiffer wigs. The instructions below suggest using both to attach your Custom Coiffer wig.
Steps for attaching your Custom Coiffer wig yourself
Step 1:
Prepare your natural hair:
- Your natural hair needs to be “flattened”; you can braid it or wrap it in a circular fashion.
Step 2:
Prepare your face:
- Your hair line needs to be clean and free from oil and any type of residue.
Wipe around your hairline (front and back of head) with alcohol pads; do not use cotton balls - use sponge wedges or make up remover pads.
- Dab skin protector around the perimeter of your head’s hairline. Let air dry a couple of minutes. Skin protector is offered in our Custom Coiffer starter kit which is available after you complete your purchase.
Step 3:
Apply double sided tape:
- Double sided tape should be applied to the front and back of your hairline. The edge of the tape will touch your hairline, the other edge will be on your hair. Tape should not be on your face. Next place a flesh tone stocking cap (a knee high with the elastic cut off can work) on your head sticking it to the tape, next apply a second layer of tape (this time on top of the stocking) in the same position as the first layer of tape. All your natural hair will now be covered. The tape and stocking will start at your hairline not on your forehead or face.
Step 4:
Prepare your wig:
- Custom Coiffer wigs are made with extra silk mesh surrounding the front hairline. This excess silk mesh needs to be cut along the hairline before it is worn. Cut off the mesh close to the hairline of the wig but be careful not to cut into the actual wig hairline.
- Use clips to pin back the wig’s hair. (the photos page shows hair pinned up) It is handy to have different size clips available- small clips to pin back the edges of the hair close to the hairline and larger clips to pin up and "pile" the length of the hair on top of the head.
- Once the wig is pinned up, and your natural hair is flattened and covered, place the wig on your head to “feel it out” and determine where you want it (where the hairline will start, match up the sides, back, etc…). Once you determine where the wig naturally sits on your head, remove the wig and sit it to the side. You are now ready to apply adhesive below your hairline/on the tape (all tape is clear).
Step 5:
Attaching your wig with glue adhesive (for extended wear)
There are 2 high quality glue adhesives for wigs on the market (Ultra Hold- which has a 4-6 week secure holding bond and Mity Tite – which has a 1-6 day secure holding bond). Most people use Ultra hold for fresh applications and use Mity Tite if a " touch up" is needed prior to removing the wig and staring over with a fresh clean application.
- Brush the adhesive around the perimeter of your hairline (your skin) (front and back, the sides are optional) and on the tape. The glue comes with a brush. You can also buy a thin paint brush to apply the glue (this will allow you to apply it in a thinner line).
The glue needs to set for 5-10 minutes. A hair dryer (on low setting) can also be used to set the glue.
- Next, sit the wig on your head, position the front of the wig in place starting at your forehead, press the wig into position at the forehead, then work down either sides of the wig pressing and setting the front of the wig into position.
- Next, align the back of the wig and press the back sides down into position. When the wig is set into position over the adhesive, the silk mesh is undetectable; the appearance of glue and silk mesh “disappear”. The proper use of this method creates an illusion of hair growing out of the scalp.
Once the glue has completely dried, the hair can be cut and/or styled.
Attaching the wig with adhesive tapes only (good for daily/short term wear)
Use double side tape along the front and back hair line perimeter. Set the wig into place the same as stated above in the glue/tape adhesive method.
